There are few pleasures as simple and delightful as a barista-made coffee. The coffee rich and chocolatey, the milk frothed just-so, the chance to enjoy a moment of uninterrupted bliss, just you and your cup of joe. Of course there are plenty of places to grab a perfectly brewed cup (try Quattro Deli or Pattison’s Patisserie at Chatswood Chase), but in this economy, more of us are looking to level up our at-home setup too. And it doesn’t mean you need to compromise on the quality of your brew. These days, our collective coffee obsession has given rise to equipment that’ll have you making cafe-quality cups in the comfort of your home, from state-of-the-art machines to locally-roasted beans and milk made especially for frothing.
In celebration of International Coffee Day, below, we round up the bits and pieces to add to your kitchen kit for the perfect brew every time.
The Machine
It always starts with having the right tools for the job, and you can’t expect a perfect brew without a high-performing machine. For aspiring baristas, Breville’s Barista Express (it’s all in the name) allows you to grind, froth and extract all in one place, measuring out the perfect dose of coffee and length of shot every time. For the fast and furious coffee fanatics, a capsule machine might be your best bet, like Nespresso’s Inissia machine, which comes with an automatic milk frother and three coffee options.

The Beans
These days, you can often get your hands on the same beans your favourite cafe uses at your local supermarket. Coles has a range of beans and pre-ground blends from renowned roasteries like Campos, Grinders and St. Ali to choose from, and if you’re in the market for pods, no one does it better than Nespresso. Can’t decide on a blend? Try them all with Nespresso’s Best Sellers assortment.
SHOP NOW: Original 160 Capsules Best Sellers Assortment, $136 from Nespresso, Lower Ground
The Milk
With the number of plant milks on offer these days, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to how we take our coffee. While dairy milk tends to withstand heat pretty well, plant milks can be a little more stubborn, so coffee connoisseurs ought to opt for barista blends. Oatly’s creamy oat milk is as delicious in an iced version as it is heated, while Bonsoy is the gold standard for good reason.

The Treat
You can’t have a morning coffee without a little sustenance. Besides, breakfast is the most important meal of the day! A flaky, buttery croissant from Pattison’s on Lower Ground is the perfect coffee companion, and one very delightful way to start your morning.
